AchieversUK.com

The Prime Minister, Gordon Brown visited his old school, Kirkcaldy High, to launch its section of the AchieversUK website.

Instructions for teachers:

AchieversUK.com is designed to be simple and hassle-free for teachers.

You can make use of either the profiles or quizzes, or both.  You can also suggest more Achievers for your school's section.

Using the profiles:

1.  Go to your school cluster's section on the website

2.  Use the short profiles with your pupils as you see fit. For example:

  • lead a class discussion on how the success of former pupils in a wide variety of fields and at different levels, shows you can succeed without becoming a celebrity

  • use specific profiles to help lessons (e.g. a profile of a World War I soldier is an ideal hook for a history lesson)

  • ask your pupils to write their own profiles for 20 years in the future, so encouraging them to think about what they realistically want to do when they leave school

  • ask pupils to make up a story which features as many of your school's Achievers as possible

  • enter the quizzes (see below)

Using the quizzes:

The quizzes are availabe from the side columns of the school pages.

Pupils can enter online.  Very little input, if any, is required from the teacher once the youngsters are at the quiz page.

Please note, pupils submit only their first name, class & teacher, and we do not collect any e-mail addresses.  We NEVER communicate with the pupils directly.

If more than 10 pupils from a primary school, and 20 pupils from a secondary school, enter a quiz, a book token or other prize will be sent to the school.

We send the prize to the class teacher and we ask them to choose a winner at random or allocate the prize to a youngster who has worked hard on the quiz and may get a particular boost from winning. (The criterion is working hard rather than getting every question correct.)

There is no need to tell us which pupil has won, because we do not post winners' names on the website.

Teachers tell us, the quizzes are extremely teacher-friendly, requiring no preparation and very little input.  (Indeed, we are teachers ourselves so this is a core aim of the project.)
