Ian
Donaldson
Music |
|
Ian
Donaldson loved music from an early age and was keen
to play in a rock band as soon as he was old enough.
He first made an impact in the punk band Skroo
but he left them in 1978 to found H20 in
Glasgow. Their first single was released in
1981 and in 1983 the band was signed to one of the
world's largest recording companies, RCA.
Their next single, 'Dream To Sleep' reached the Top
Twenty, and in 1984 H2O released their only album
'Faith'. One of the band's most distinctive
sounds came from Ian's strong, deep voice which
could also soar to hit the high notes. The
songs were very much of the 80s which brought H2O a
lot of success during that decade. |

John
Ridgeway
Seaman |
|
John
is known for his love of seabirds but he is also one
of the toughest individuals Scotland has produced.
In 1996, he became famous when he rowed across the
Atlantic Ocean with fellow Scot, Chay Blyth.
More recently, John has been in the news again
thanks to his year-long voyage to track pirate
'long-line' fishermen who are threatening to wipe
out the majestic seabird, the albatross. Some
fishing boats lay illegal lines up to 8 miles long
and fitted with millions of hooks! Every year,
more than 100,000 albatrosses die on these lines.
John's voyage helped draw the world's attention to
the problem and resulted in a petition to the UN
with 100,000 signatures. |

a battle near Somme in France but again returned to
the fighting. At the time of his promotion he was

High School, who said, "John will make a courteous,
gentlemanly officer, firm but kind, thoughtful for
others, resourceful, earnest and vigorous in
action." |

pupils choose to help people less well
off than themselves. For example, Emma spends a lot
of time working with a volunteer group which helps
the families of local children with special needs.
Emma is happy to give up her spare time in this way
because she finds it very satisfying and has also
made many good friends. Now she is considering
