Glasgow

........       "Congratulations on this initiative. I am sure it will have the effect of encouraging young folk to fulfil their potential.  I wish you all success."  -  Andrew Welsh (MSP)     ........      "We are delighted to highlight the many successes of people connected with Glasgow."  -  Sandra Prior, Glasgow City Council Education Dept.      ........

Andrew
Welsh

Politics

Andrew is one of the 129 MSPs who take decisions which affect everyone in Scotland.  He went to Glasgow University and worked in a bank before becoming a Modern Studies and History teacher.  Andrew was always keen on politics and was elected as a local councillor for the SNP, and then as an MP in the House of Commons before he became the MSP for Angus in 1999.(more)

Significant Teachers:
Mr Boyd, Mr Duncan, Miss Reynard, Mr Campbell

Sir Alex
Ferguson

Sport

After school, Alex completed an apprenticeship as a toolmaker before he made the grade in football at 23.  His clubs included Rangers, Dunfermline and Falkirk.  As a manager, his record is second to none. His Aberdeen side not only dominated Celtic and Rangers, but also defeated Real Madrid in a European final!  Sir Alex went on to make Manchester United the most successful team of the 1990s!

Patricia
Slaven

Debating

As a pupil at Govan High, Pat loved the sound and power of words.  Little surprise then that she was drawn to the world of debating.  As an English teacher she encouraged many of her pupils to take part in debates. Pat has also been a judge at the World Schools Debating Championships for many years and has attended competitions in the USA, South Africa, Peru and Singapore.

Ian
Donaldson

Music

Ian Donaldson loved music from an early age and was keen to play in a rock band as soon as he was old enough.  He first made an impact in the punk band Skroo but he left them in 1978 to found H20 in Glasgow.  Their first single was released in 1981 and in 1983 the band was signed to one of the world's largest recording companies, RCA.  Their next single, 'Dream To Sleep' reached the Top Twenty, and in 1984 H2O released their only album 'Faith'.  One of the band's most distinctive sounds came from Ian's strong, deep voice which could also soar to hit the high notes.  The songs were very much of the 80s which brought H2O a lot of success during that decade.

John
Ridgeway

Seaman

John is known for his love of seabirds but he is also one of the toughest individuals Scotland has produced.  In 1996, he became famous when he rowed across the Atlantic Ocean with fellow Scot, Chay Blyth.  More recently, John has been in the news again thanks to his year-long voyage to track pirate 'long-line' fishermen who are threatening to wipe out the majestic seabird, the albatross.  Some fishing boats lay illegal lines up to 8 miles long and fitted with millions of hooks!  Every year, more than 100,000 albatrosses die on these lines.  John's voyage helped draw the world's attention to the problem and resulted in a petition to the UN with 100,000 signatures.

John Hill
Johnston

Soldier

John was born in 1893.  After leaving school he went to Glasgow Technical College to train as a draughtsman.  With the outbreak of World War 1 he enlisted as a Private in the Royal Scots regiment.  In 1916 he was shot in the lung but returned to service and was later promoted to Lieutenant.  In 1917 he was wounded in the leg in a battle near Somme in France but again returned to the fighting. At the time of his promotion he was given a reference by Mr Hutchinson, Rector of Govan High School, who said, "John will make a courteous, gentlemanly officer, firm but kind, thoughtful for others, resourceful, earnest and vigorous in action."

Leo
Blair

Law

Tony Blair's father, Leo, was adopted by a Govan shipyard worker in the 1920s.  As a young man he was a communist but after serving in the army during World War II, he switched to the Conservatives.  In the years that followed, Leo became a successful lawyer.  He hoped to be elected as an MP but ill health prevented this.  In the 1990s, he joined the Labour Party and watched his son became one of the most powerful Labour Prime Ministers in history.

Louise

Brown

Nurse

Louise realised a childhood dream when she gained a place on a nursing course. She is now in the third year of her training and has passed all her assessments so far. Louise is looking forward to working in Accident & Emergency (A&E) as she will discover whether TV's Casualty is accurate!  She eventually hopes to become a hospital ward sister.
