Alistair
MacLean

Writer

One of the most popular writers of the twentieth century. From school, Alistair joined up for the navy. Later he read English at Glasgow University and went on to become a teacher. His years spent aboard a wartime cruiser gave him the background for HMS Ulysses, his successful first novel which was published in 1955. Many of his books became classic films such as The Guns of Navarone and Where Eagles Dare.

Jean
Turner

Politics

In 2003 Jean was elected as one of the 129 Members of the Scottish Parliament who take decisions that affect everyone in Scotland.  Jean studied medicine at Aberdeen University.  and then spent 25 years as a local GP and more than 10 years working in hospitals.  Jean was elected MSP for Strathkelvin and Bearsden. Unusually, she stood as an Independent (i.e. she did not represent a party). (more)

Nikitta

Angus

Music

Nikitta hit the headlines in 2006 when she became one of the most popular contestants on the TV show X Factor, making it all the way through to the final rounds.  Nikitta showed great bravery for a 17 year-old as during the previous year she had lost her mother to cancer.  However, she overcame this tragedy to deliver a string of great performances which won the hearts and votes of millions of viewers.

Robert
Service

Poet

Robert was among the first pupils at Hillhead when the school opened in 1885. He loved reading and studied English at Glasgow University.  He saw life as an adventure so he headed off for Canada where he had an amazing range of jobs and wrote books and poetry about the things he saw and heard. His poems such as those about the harsh life of miners in the Yukon gold rush have often been criticised by purists but they were loved by a great many people and also made him very rich!  (more)

Menzies
Campbell

Politics

Sir Menzies Campbell is a remarkably talented person. After leaving school, he studied Arts and Law at Glasgow University. While there, he was elected President of Glasgow University Union - a real achievement. He then won a scholarship to study at Stanford University in the USA. In 1964, Menzies was chosen to represent Britain at the Olympic Games! Next he became an Advocate and thereafter the Liberal Democrat MP for North East Fife - a seat he retained at the 2005 General Election.

Alf
Wight

Writer

James Herriot is one of Britain's best-selling authors. However, this is not his real name. He was actually christened Alf Wight and he was born in 1916.  After Hillhead High, Jim trained as a vet before working in a veterinary practice in the Yorkshire dales for many happy years. The stories and adventures based on his time as a young vet are immortalised in his celebrated series of books ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ .  The books sold in millions and were made into a TV series and a film.
