is a top actor. He shot to fame with his wonderful
and moving performance as Billy Elliot's father in
the film of that name. Following this, he has
worked with some of the world's top actors and

Angela became famous when she starred in a series of
Bank of Scotland adverts. She has worked for
the bank for many years and was chosen for the
campaign because of her singing voice and friendly

Tiger Tim is a well-known DJ whose enthusiasm has
helped him keep up the pace over the years. His
career has been exciting and varied. Tim has been a
pop singer, has presented shows on TV and radio, and
has even found time to write his autobiography. |

Shelley hit the headlines when she won the
Scottish Young Adult Learners' Award for 2004.
She did so after starting a construction course at
John Wheatley College where her good work helped her
secure an apprenticeship with Glasgow City Council
as a trainee joiner. |

is one of the world's top snooker players. He has
won many tournaments and in 2004, reached the final
of the World Championships. Like most top
sports stars, Graeme's success is built on a great
deal of hard work as well as talent. |

studied at Strathclyde University and went on to
become a successful civil engineer working in many
parts of the world. He was based in San Diego and
Palm Springs in the USA before moving to Canada
where he now lives in Ontario and is currently
working in Edmonton. |

In
2004 Lochend's under 14 football team won the
Crookston Cup which is open to all Glasgow Schools.
This was a great achievement given that it was the
team's first year together. In fact, it was the
Lochend football team for a number of years. |

is one student who clearly benefited from
the Youthstart scheme which Lochend High runs
in partnership with John
Wheatley College. Robert's progress was such that he
featured in a BBC TV programme about the scheme. |

school, Bobby was a wonderful footballer whose
talent allowed him to outwit and outplay bigger and
stronger opponents. After school he played for
Rangers and was capped by Scotland. Other clubs
included Motherwell and Morton. |

Award in 2003/4 for the groundbreaking partnership
with John Wheatley College in the delivery of an
alternative curriculum. Many students have benefited

football. Bobby was a top player at Rangers and
Kilmarnock before he became a manager with
Kilmarnock, Hibs and now Plymouth Argyle. In 1997 he

realised a childhood dream when she gained a place
on a nursing course. She is now in the third year of her
training and has passed all her assessments so far.
Louise is looking forward to working in Accident &
Emergency (A&E) as she will discover whether TV's

to become a hospital ward sister.

screen. Many people in Scotland may not know his name but recognise his face because

TV shows. David enjoys the TV work but is

is a good example. After going to university and
then studying to become a teacher, he has enjoyed a
long and successful career in the classroom.

was one of many whose great achievement was to help
Britain and its allies win the First World War.
Sadly, he paid the ultimate price as a report in a
local newspaper in 1916 tells: "Corporal J. Smith has been
killed in action near Somme in France. He was
educated in the local school and before being called up was
a farm labourer. He was
19 years of age."

workplace, people must be prepared to re-train and
keep their skills up-to-date. Susan is a good
example. She first served an apprenticeship as an
engineer and has since trained in computer studies.
She enjoys using
modern technology in her work. In fact, Susan
now trains other engineers in the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD)
at work.

community where he grew up.

degree in Politics & Economics. He then decided to train as a social worker.

life even when his team loses.

public, but local councillors such as Mary, take
many decisions that have a real impact on the lives
of local people. Each councillor is elected to represent an area called an
'electoral ward'. Mary is a hard-working councillor
who tries her best to help people with a very wide
range of problems.

Pauline liked accountancy at school and chose to
study it at university. She then joined a large
Scottish bank and quickly became a team leader who
enjoyed the challenge of helping others to perform well.
Pauline has since shown that Scottish qualifications
are respected throughout the world by moving to a
senior post with a large accountancy firm in Australia!

Politicians make Government decisions but it is
civil servants who put them into practice.
Without civil servants, important services such as
hospitals and schools would grind to a halt. Many
former pupils have gone on to enjoy successful
careers in the Civil Service. Alan is a good
example. He has held many top posts including
a spell working closely with a government minister.

school is proud of many former pupils who have gone
on to work in the National Health Service (NHS).
Janet studied Medicine at university and at one
stage was a doctor in the Accident & Emergency Unit
of a major hospital dealing with victims of major
road traffic accidents as well as patients with
sprained ankles! She is now a General Practitioner (GP)
based at a local health centre.

pupils choose to help people less well
off than themselves. For example, Emma spends a lot
of time working with a volunteer group which helps
the families of local children with special needs.
Emma is happy to give up her spare time in this way
because she finds it very satisfying and has also
made many good friends. Now she is considering
a career in education.
