began as an actor but he now also writes and directs
films. He first shot to fame for his part in the
film ‘My Name is Joe’ by Ken Loach which won him the
'Best Actor' award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Other film roles include ’Braveheart’ and ’Trainspotting’.
Peter has also won awards for his recent work as a

regular columns for our national newspapers. Tom is
a good example. His writing on sport, celebrities
and many other topics in papers such as The Herald
and The Daily Record have made millions of people
smile. Tom has also written a number of successful

Tom Leonard is a successful writer and poet.
After leaving school he worked in a bookshop and
then went to Glasgow University in 1967. He still
lives in Glasgow and is now a full-time
writer. One of his most famous poems is called ‘The
Good Thief’. It is a retelling of the
crucifixion story but on this occasion it is set in
the streets of Glasgow. |

showed a talent for science at school. He then gained a
degree from Glasgow University before going on to
London University to carry out research for his PhD.
James has made rapid progress in his field and
became a Professor in the school of Biomedical

Louise
realised a childhood dream when she gained a place
on a nursing course. She is now in the third year of her
training and has passed all her assessments so far.
Louise is looking forward to working in Accident &
Emergency (A&E) as she will discover whether TV's
Casualty is accurate! She eventually hopes
to become a hospital ward sister.

Gary
plays a vital role as one of the senior managers in
Glasgow City Council's Youth Services Division.
After experiencing some tough times as a youngster,
he took up amateur dramatics and at the age of 15,
helped set up GUST (Govan Under Sixteen's Theatre).
He went on to play roles in TV shows such as
Taggart. Gary has also completed a degree at
Strathclyde University.

former pupils have followed a career in the law.
Sandra is a good example. She studied law at
university before joining a law firm to complete her
training. She has since gained experience of many
aspects of the Scottish legal system. Sandra
now puts this knowledge to good use as a senior
partner in a local firm of solicitors.

her final year at school. She has never regretted it. Her work is varied and
she enjoys helping the public in many ways. Sarah
also likes being part of a hard-working team who

Britain and its allies win the First World War.
Sadly, he paid the ultimate price as a report in a
local newspaper in 1916 tells: "Corporal J. Smith has been
killed in action near Somme in France. He was
educated in the local school and before being called up was
a farm labourer. He was
19 years of age."

always wanted to run his own business and has now
achieved his aim. As the owner of a local
building firm he tends to be very busy because a lot
of people know and trust him. Of course, Brian
knows he must do a good job or his reputation will
quickly begin to suffer. Brian is very proud
of the fact that his company now creates jobs in the
community where he grew up.

spent a gap year working as a volunteer in a
developing country before completing a university
degree in Politics & Economics. He then decided to train as a social worker.
Robert now has a heavy case load at work and at
times, his job can prove demanding. However, he
has no regrets because he finds it very satisfying
to help people in great need.

example. She first served an apprenticeship as an
engineer and has since trained in computer studies.

now trains other engineers in the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD)
at work.

life even when his team loses.

public, but local councillors such as Mary, take
many decisions that have a real impact on the lives
of local people. Each councillor is elected to represent an area called an
'electoral ward'. Mary is a hard-working councillor
who tries her best to help people with a very wide
range of problems.

Pauline liked accountancy at school and chose to
study it at university. She then joined a large
Scottish bank and quickly became a team leader who
enjoyed the challenge of helping others to perform well.
Pauline has since shown that Scottish qualifications

senior post with a large accountancy firm in Australia!

civil servants who put them into practice.
Without civil servants, important services such as
hospitals and schools would grind to a halt. Many
former pupils have gone on to enjoy successful
careers in the Civil Service. Alan is a good
example. He has held many top posts including
a spell working closely with a government minister.

school is proud of many former pupils who have gone
on to work in the National Health Service (NHS).
Janet studied Medicine at university and at one
stage was a doctor in the Accident & Emergency Unit
of a major hospital dealing with victims of major
road traffic accidents as well as patients with
sprained ankles! She is now a General Practitioner (GP)
based at a local health centre.

off than themselves. For example, Emma spends a lot
of time working with a volunteer group which helps
the families of local children with special needs.
Emma is happy to give up her spare time in this way

part-time basis. Philip is a good example. He spent

job' but his band still enjoys playing at functions. |

TV shows. David enjoys the TV work but is
