Ian
McCandlish

Business

Ian took on an important job in the world of retail when he became General Manager of the new Harvey Nichols store in Edinburgh. As the boss, he was placed in charge of 500 staff and millions of pounds worth of designer clothes. When he was at St Roch's Ian had other things on his mind, such as playing in the team that won the Scottish Schools Shield at Hampden!

Roch
Stars

Star Pupils

The school has its own music group called Roch Stars. Recently, the group came second in the Strathclyde Police anti-racist song competition. As a result, Roch Stars were asked to perform at the local Sighthill International Day. St Roch's has a number of asylum seeker children and the music group has helped them to make friends and feel part of the school.

Maurice
Johnston

Sport

During his career as a top professional footballer in Scotland, England, France and the USA, Maurice Johnston was rarely out of the headlines. He is one of the few people to have played for both Celtic and Rangers. As a striker who scored many goals he was also a success with Scotland. His tireless running and skill not only brought him goals but made many opportunities for his team-mates.

John

Smith

Soldier

John was one of many whose great achievement was to help Britain and its allies win the First World War. Sadly, he paid the ultimate price as a report in a local newspaper in 1916 tells: "Corporal J. Smith has been killed in action near Somme in France.  He was educated in the local school and before being called up was a farm labourer. He was 19 years of age."

William
Murphy

Engineer

Like most youngsters, William may have dreamed of one day working in the space industry. Unusually, for William the dream turned into reality. After leaving St Roch's in the 1980s he gained the necessary qualifications to work as an engineer and test pilot for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in the USA. You probably know the organisation better as NASA.

Cheryl

Star
Pupil

Another international cap came St Roch's way in 2004 when Cheryl was picked to play football for Scotland at under 15 level in a major tournament held in Ireland. This was a great honour and Cheryl had the added thrill that, unlike the Scottish Senior Team, she was representing a side which were reigning champions as Scotland won the previous year's event.

Mohammed
Salim

Star Pupil

On a dark night in 1999, Mohammed and the rest of his family left their father and fled the bloody war of Somalia. They boarded a boat bound for Britain where they became asylum seekers. The family settled in Glasgow where Mohammed and his siblings attended St Roch's. It was a difficult time and Mohammed faced many problems, but his love of music helped him cope. Along with other pupils he set up a dance group, The Unbreakable Crew, which performed in front of Prince William.

Ian
Stillie

Business

After leaving St Roch's, Ian completed his university degree before deciding to head off to South Africa where he got involved in the mining industry. South Africa is very rich in minerals so mining is very big business there. Like many Scots who have followed the same path over the years, Ian proved his skill in business and returned to Scotland years later with sufficient capital (money) to invest in new business ventures. His experience abroad has also proved a great help in his new life.

Sarah

Innes

Police

Sarah decided on a career in the police when she was in her final year at school. She has never regretted it.  Her work is varied and she enjoys helping the public in many ways. Sarah also likes being part of a hard-working team who help each other.  She believes it is important to uphold the law and finds it is very interesting to deal with those people who decide to break it.

David

Lewis

Music

Music is important to most people but only a lucky few manage to make a living from it. Even if it is not possible to do this for an entire career, many musicians get great enjoyment from performing on a part-time basis. David is a good example. He spent many years as a full-time musician, even appearing on TV.  In recent years he has taken a 'normal job' but his band still enjoys playing at functions.

Jim

Watson

Education

Local families believe learning is important and it is therefore no surprise that many former pupils have achieved a lot in the world of education. Jim is a good example. After going to university and then studying to become a teacher, he has enjoyed a long and successful career in the classroom.  Jim has helped many young people not only pass exams, but also enjoy school!

Emma

Hughes

Community

Many pupils choose to help people less well off than themselves. For example, Emma spends a lot of time working with a volunteer group which helps the families of local children with special needs.  Emma is happy to give up her spare time in this way because she finds it very satisfying and has also made many good friends.  Now she is considering a career in education.

* representative profile

Susan

In the workplace, people must be prepared to re-train and keep their skills up-to-date.  Susan is a good example. She first served an apprenticeship as an engineer and has since trained in computer studies.  She enjoys using modern technology in her work.  In fact, Susan now trains other engineers in the use of Computer Aided Design (CAD) at work.

Brian

Hall

Business

Brian always wanted to run his own business and has now achieved his aim.  As the owner of a local building firm he tends to be very busy because a lot of people know and trust him.  Of course, Brian knows he must do a good job or his reputation will quickly begin to suffer.  Brian is very proud of the fact that his company now creates jobs in the community where he grew up.

Robert spent a gap year working as a volunteer in a developing country before completing a university degree in Politics & Economics. * representative profile

Robertson

Finance

Pauline liked accountancy at school and chose to study it at university. She then joined a large Scottish bank and quickly became a team leader who enjoyed the challenge of helping others to perform well.  Pauline has since shown that Scottish qualifications  are respected throughout the world by moving to a senior post with a large accountancy firm in Australia!

* representative profile

Alan

Shaw

Government

Politicians make Government decisions but it is civil servants who put them into practice.  Without civil servants, important services such as hospitals and schools would grind to a halt. Many former pupils have gone on to enjoy successful careers in the Civil Service.  Alan is a good example.  He has held many top posts including a spell working closely with a government minister.

* representative profile

Janet

Wood

Health

The school is proud of many former pupils who have gone on to work in the National Health Service (NHS).
