has won many awards for painting and sculpture, such
as his bust of Donald Dewar shown above. After
Shawlands, he studied at Glasgow Art School and went
on to become a tutor there. In 1985 he gave up
teaching to devote all his time to his own work.

Atta
may be the star of the Ken
Loach film Ae Fond Kiss but he also works for
a youth group helping children from ethnic
communities cope with a range of serious problems.
Apart from this, Atta has also completed a Business
degree from Strathclyde University. |

is one of Scotland's most talented signer
songwriters of the past 40 years. His thoughtful
lyrics are reflected in strong melodies and great
guitar playing. As a result, John has built up a
very loyal fan base throughout the UK and beyond. |

Carol
fell in love with Physics at school because she
found it challenging ... like solving a puzzle. She
has since gone on become both a senior lecturer in
physics and a research scientist. On leaving school
Carol studied at Glasgow and St Andrews Universities
before completing her PhD in England. She went on to
lecture and carry out research in Physics at

Jack
Milroy

When
he was a pupil at Shawlands, Jack was known by his real name, James Cruden.
With his stage name, Jack Milroy, he became very
well known. After fighting in World War II, Jack built a
wonderful career as a comic on stage and TV. His
Francie & Josie partnership with Rikki
Fulton remains one of Scotland's best-loved comedy acts. Jack was also known for his great pantomime
performances. |

Michaela
Foster
Marsh |

Michaela is extremely talented. She studied fashion design
at college before heading for
Canada where she developed her love of music. Now a successful recording artist,
her music has featured on Dawson's Creek and
she has also written the score for a film. Michaela
loves performing live and has played a number of
successful concerts around Britain, including in Glasgow.

Alex
is one the most familiar faces on Scottish
television thanks to
his portrayal of the gritty police detective, Matt
Burke in Taggart. Over the years he has
enjoyed a very successful acting career covering a
wide variety of straight and comedy roles on stage
and in film as well as TV. Alex has also written for television.

a young chef at the famous Brian Maule
Restaurant in Glasgow's West End. Jay first
impressed Brian when he was one of the Shawlands
pupils working on the Culinary Excellence
project which each year raises thousands of pounds
for charity while also providing pupils useful experience
of the catering industry. |

Bill
is one of the 129 MSPs who take decisions that
affect everyone in Scotland. He is a member of
the SNP and represents the West of Scotland
constituency at Holyrood. Bill enjoyed science at school and
was both an environmental biologist and IT

Thomas

(1893-1974)
A brilliant individual who won awards for his work
in medicine, dentistry and metallurgy! Thomas
trained at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, Glasgow
University and Glasgow Dental School. He went on to
enjoy a wonderful career in many fields in which he
helped patients, lectured and published academic
papers. He became a very highly thought of university professor. |

Eileen
Herlie
Acting |

Eileen (b. 1920) made her name with the Scottish National Theatre
Company and then enjoyed success in London's West End. She
then hit Broadway in the USA, starring opposite
Richard Burton in Hamlet. She also worked
with Sir Laurence Olivier.
Eileen appeared in many Hollywood films and later in
her career landed a key role in the popular US
television show All My Children. |

MacKinnon

Sara
studied law at Edinburgh University where she also
won a place to study for a year at university in Montreal .. a time
she describes as "a fantastic learning and life
experience". On her return to Scotland, Sara
received an excellent training as a solicitor with
top commercial law firm Dundas
& Wilson. She specialised in financial services
and is now an in-house solicitor with the RBS Group. |

Kaleem studied Electronics &
Electrical Engineering at Glasgow University. He
then switched and trained to become a chartered
accountant. Kaleem also stood
for the Labour Party in the 2005 General
Election, contesting the safe Tory seat of Henley in
London with the well-known Conservative MP, Boris

was one of many whose great achievement was to help
Britain and its allies win the First World War.
Sadly, he paid the ultimate price as a newspaper
report in 1916 tells: "Corporal J. Smith has been killed
in action near Somme in France. He was educated at
the local school and, before being called up, was
a factory worker. He was
19 years of age."

was also awarded an OBE and appointed to the House of
